The Observatory of Roma VinoExcellence: Sangiovese today,
its strengths and problems
Sangiovese is one of Italy’s most
important native grape varieties and is planted all over the world,
from the Unisted Staes of America to Asutralia. Much like pinot
noir, it is an excellent translator of soils, but it is also a very
difficult grape, as it is a late ripening variety that has only
recntly been the subject of extensive university studies, and that
can produce, in the wrong conditions, wines marred by high acidity
and tough tannins. When properly handled, it can yield one of the
world’s noblest wines, that do not need at all the “help”, declared
or not, legal or not, of other grapes sucha s the international
varieties cabernet sauvignon, syrah, or merlot. The Roma
VinoExcellence and merano Winefestival Observatory will deal with
the many aspects of sangiovese in Italy and the rest of the world
with possibly the finest panel of wine experts ever assembled on the
subject in one conference. Experts such as Maurizo Castelli, Niccolò
d’Afflitto and Franco Bernabei, three winemakers who may well be the
three single greatest experts of sangiovese in the world, Donato
Lanati, the winemaker and university professor who more than anybody
else has done, and is doing, to correctly identify the authenticity
of wines in the bottle, famous producers such as Marco Pallanti of
the Castello di Ama, Paolo De Marchi of Isole e Olena, Franco
Biondi-Santi of Biondi-Santi, Francesco Leanza of Podere Salicutti,
Luca de Ferrari of Boscarelli and more will add to the level and
quality of the round table discussion and question and answer
session to follow.

The Rome International Focus Conference on Cabernet Franc
The conference wants to tackle the
cabernet people often forget about. In reality it is an
up-and-coming grape variety in many parts of the world, as
winemakers and public alike begin to appreciate the fine, refined
aromas and flavours it can yield when properly grown. The conference
will be of exceptional interest and a unique learning opportunity
thanks to the presence of world-class experts such as Jean Claude
Berrouet, historical winemaker at J.P. Moueix, responsible for over
forty years of Pétrus and many other cult Pomerols, Kees Van Leeuwen,
winemaker and consultant viticulturist at Château Cheval Blanc in
Saint Emilion and a Professor of Viticulture in Bordeaux; Angelo
Pavan, of Canada’s Cave Spring Cellars, one of the country’s top
estates; Delia Viader, owner of Viader in California; Vincent Dupuch,
perhaps the single biggest overall expert on cabernet franc in
France; the Marchese Niccolò Incisa della Rocchetta who’ll tell us
about the beginnings of cabernet franc in Tuscany back in the 1940s;
